One of my favorite analogies when it comes to receiving salvation is the big mac. Jesus is both our Lord and savior and to receive His saving grace without His lordship is like ordering a big mac but only getting the bun minus the patties and all the other ingredients stuffed into it. You can’t just receive Jesus as your get out of hell free card but you’ll need to accept Him as Lord of your life. And the degree that we submit to the lordship of Jesus is the degree that we understand the gospel.
What do you mean Bojo? Glad you asked. The way we usually respond to someone or something is determined by how much we understand or know that someone or something. Let’s take math for example. When you think about it math is actually simple because the answers are absolute, 1 + 1 will always equal 2, not 3, not 11, not 3/4. Of course as you go further in mathematics yet lack an understanding of the fundamentals we have a hard time racking our brains in algebra and calculus. So then we would respond by saying things like math is not for me or I suck at math.
When we encounter the gospel of Jesus Christ we are in awe of the amazing grace and abounding love of God. We acknowledge our need for Christ and accept Him as Lord and Savior of our lives. We begin to repent and turn from our wicked ways by relying on the power of the Holy Spirit. As we go further in our walk with God we learn about doctrines, about Biblical principles, about discipleship, about obedience, etc. and discover a standard of living for those who follow after Christ. We are called to submit to the Lordship of Jesus every single day of our lives and not just on a Sunday, not only when you’re surrounded by other Christians, and not only when it’s convenient. Some tend to get overwhelmed with the lordship of Christ that it causes them to respond by saying Jesus is not for me or I suck at Christianity.
It’s possible to repsond that way when you lose sight of the gospel or when your understanding of the gospel deteriorates. Thus, obedience to the Word of God and submitting to the lordship of Christ becomes a burden, something we do drudgingly. Rather than moving in obedience because of God’s overwhelming love and grace in our lives and submitting to His lordship in worship and honor, bringing glory to His name.
Easier said than done. It helps to go back to the gospel every once in a while. Better yet if you preach the gospel to yourself everyday.
