The Darkest Night of the Dark Knight

I’m sure many of you are now aware of the shooting that happened during the midnight screening of the latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. A man carrying multiple firearms enters the theater wearing a bullet proof vest under his coat and begins to shoot in the direction of the moviegoers. The news reports 12 deaths and dozens more injured from this tragedy. When I first read about what had happened I imagined it like it was a scene from a movie till it began to sink in that this really happened.

When the news broke out I was reminded about what had happened during several intervals throughout that day. I was thinking about what was the point of killing all of those people? Is the Dark Knight trilogy somehow to blame for one man’s outburst? It is some kind of rivalry between DC comics and Marvel? Is it a conspiracy of the US government to somehow enforce a law to control the distribution of firearms? You see, there are many angles we can look at when we hear and read about this.

And the more I thought about what had happened, my anger and hatred towards this shooter started to grow until I realized that I am no different. I’ve never shot anyone in my life, let alone hold a real gun in my hand, but this man needs the gospel just as much as I need the gospel. It’s easy to compare one’s sins with that of another (I know I have) but in the eyes of God we’re all sinners. Yes, I believe this shooter needs to pay for his crimes. The truth is we all need to pay for the consequences of our sins. Yet, God made a way and paid for our sins in full when He sent Jesus to die on the cross. Jesus was treated and executed like a criminal so that we may receive the grace and forgiveness of God. We all need the gospel, we all need Jesus.
